What is Applied Kinesiology?

Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a non-invasive assessment system that uses manual muscle testing to evaluate how your body is responding to structural, nutritional, and emotional stress. At East Nashville Chiropractic, we use AK to guide personalized care that addresses the root cause — not just the symptom.

What Is Applied Kinesiology?

Developed in 1964 by Dr. George Goodheart Jr., Applied Kinesiology combines muscle testing with clinical knowledge of anatomy, neurology, and physiology. Because the nervous system controls every organ, gland, and tissue in the body, subtle changes in muscle response can reveal where stress or imbalance exists — giving us a more complete picture of your health.

The Triad of Health

AK is built around the understanding that three dimensions of health are always influencing one another:

  • Structural — spine, joints, and muscles

  • Biochemical — nutrition, digestion, and hormones

  • Mental/Emotional — stress and emotional well-being

Chronic stress can disrupt digestion. Poor nutrition can weaken structural stability. A misaligned spine can impair nerve communication. AK helps us determine which side of the triad needs the most support so care can be precise and personalized.

How Muscle Testing Works

During an AK evaluation, a muscle is gently tested to establish a baseline neurological response. We then introduce a specific stimulus — light pressure on a reflex point, a nutritional supplement, or having you touch certain areas of the body — and retest the muscle. Changes in muscle tone tell us how the nervous system is adapting to that stimulus.

This is not about strength. It's about neurological communication, and it gives us real-time, clinically meaningful information to guide your care.

Applied Kinesiology and Food Sensitivities

One of the most common uses of AK in our East Nashville practice is evaluating food sensitivities. Unlike acute allergies, sensitivities often don't cause immediate reactions — instead they contribute quietly to symptoms like:

  • Bloating and digestive discomfort

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Brain fog

  • Joint stiffness

  • Skin irritation

  • Chronic headaches

Using AK, we can assess how your body responds to specific foods and nutrients, and build nutritional recommendations around those real responses — rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What Patients Experience

When underlying stressors are identified and addressed, patients often notice improvements in areas beyond what originally brought them in — including improved digestion, more stable energy, clearer thinking, reduced inflammation, and faster recovery from adjustments.

Why Patients Appreciate This Approach

Applied Kinesiology is non-invasive, immediate, and entirely personalized. There are no needles and no waiting for lab results. Your body provides real-time feedback, and care is shaped around what your body actually needs — not a generalized protocol.
